We have been investigating the big questions of “what is energy… how is energy transformed and used… and what is the best source of energy – why?” The word “electricity” comes up a LOT in our discussions, because, after all, that’s what the energy is typically converted into so that we can use it. Today’s field trip was to the Meralco Museum of History, so that we could get a better understanding of this very important company in the Philippines – they provide Manila with its’ electrical energy. Our own energy was high as we set off from school at 8:15. The fun thing is that we watched out of the bus window for as many examples of persuasion as we could! It’s true that persuasion is EVERYWHERE!!! We played the estimating game of “how many minutes will it be before we arrive at Meralco?” and the winner was 32 minutes – not bad for Manila traffic!! Then it was off to the museum. We started with a very informative video of 100 Years of Meralco, all set to music. Then it was time to enter the Time Tunnel, as we were transported back in time to when there were street cars in Manila. It was so much fun to climb aboard an old-fashioned street car for our pictures!! There were lots of hands-on exhibits and even maps (another Grade 3 unit), so¬† here was plenty to discuss. the highlight for many was watching volunteers have a “hair-raising” experience… I won’t spoil the surprise… you’ll have to look at the slide show! Enjoy!!! [tylr-slidr userID=”” groupID=””]http://www.flickr.com/photos/ismanilaes/sets/72157629214012337/[/tylr-slidr]
