It is very motivating when children have an authentic purpose for their learning. Our Unit of Inquiry on healthy habits has been integrated with service learning to give the Smartians a unique experience – planning from start to finish how to link wellbeing to community. Last week they started their research at the CMC, having chosen which area of health they wished to explore… physical, mental, social or emotional health. This week they finished up their group research and then worked on the manner of presenting the information – a cartoon strip. Inspiration had been provided through the class Read Aloud book called “SuperFlex Takes on Rock Brain and the Team of Unthinkables” by Michelle Garcia-Winner. Suddenly everyone had ideas of their own SuperHeroes like: Mental Man, Emotional Brothers and Social Man!! It was kind of fun to tell the researched information through a cartoon story, and the end results are absolutely stunning. On Monday, we will be going on our field trip to GK777 to talk to the doctor at the community clinic about health issues in the community,  [tylr-slidr userID=”” groupID=””]http://www.flickr.com/photos/ismanilaes/sets/72157631697210371/[/tylr-slidr] visit the preschool maybe and leave our work in the library and community centre for the citizens to enjoy! What an amazing effort and what an amazing connection we are making through this experience…
