It is merely symbolic, but we all boarded a school bus today and headed “over the wall”… meaning out of our immediate comfort zone and into the unknown, for many. Our field trip was to the GK777 site in nearby Taguig. However as we zoomed along C5 and then took the turnoff to head into a new barangay, it was like a whole new world away from our usual “walls”. The Smartians had done a pre-trip reflection in class earlier, where they:

drew something they thought they would see…made a list of sounds they expected to hear… wrote about how they thought they would feel on this trip and listed 2 questions they would like answered.

Then it was time to board the bus and head “over the wall”, with their health cartoons in hand. The building was amazing – beautifully coloured, with fresh paint smells still in the air. We climbed up and up and up to the top floor, where rows of chairs had been set out for us. Two of the preschool teachers were there to show us a presentation, using a LCD projector, all about GK and its’ goal, as well as a presentation about health in the community. Many questions were asked and all were answered, sometimes with  surprising responses. Later we went downstairs to the actual Preschool classroom, and imagine our surprise when we walked into a small, but beautifully painted room, complete with a flat screen television, workbooks and other pieces of typical school equipment. The children were out at lunch, but little by little they came back in to have some sharing time. It was interesting to share our work with them and try to communicate with the universal language of pictures and acting out gestures!! Having said goodbye, we headed back to the familiar walls of ISM. Later after lunch, the Smartians did Part 2 of their reflection– what stood out for you? How are you feeling after going on the trip? What 2 questions do you still want answered? How does your reaction before and after differ? What connections to the physical wellbeing unit can you make?!

Callum started the reflection ball rolling when he commented: “I think they have already given us something…” This started a lot of other reflecting:

Rico -knowledge about how they live…

John – happiness in my heart…

Mrs. McGrath- new eyes to see the world differently…

Jakob – open doors to new adventures…

Somya -friendship…

Lucas – joy from the experience…

Teun – happiness by being part of  a group…

Mishaa – the force to be stronger – to have experiences that are new to us…

Oliver S. – they have shared a little bit of their heart…

Shamir – gave us ideas…

Sian – gave us their emotions – this then made us become “healthier” –> emotionally, socially, mentally

Callum – they gave us information about health

Lucas – gave us an experience of a whole new world…

John – given us everything that they have felt…

Eve – have given us a new memory to fix in our brains…
