The power of this spelling approach known as RealSpelling and Wordworks is that children see how understanding spelling and the English language system will help them in every aspect of life and work! Case in hand, this week we integrated Literacy with our Unit of Inquiry with word study… practising our comprehension skills of weather patterns + cycles, all the while hunting for examples of word sums to understand word structure. Every time someone found an example, they wrote the word sum on a Post-it Note and left it on the actual page for another team member to agree/disagree. For example, the word sum for raining is rain + ing –> raining. The Smartians are gettign really good at noticing new suffixes, prefixes and fancy terms like “bound bases” and “connector vowels” roll off their tongues now – bravo!
