Mr Allison always has a Song of the Week, and I used their current song, “Five Feet and a Risin'” by Johnny Cash… with a twist. The first time we watched the YouTube video, it was the version with only the lyrics and music up on the screen. They had to listen and try to make sense (comprehension) of what they had seen and heard. Of course I also pushed them to think how this CONNECTS to what we are currently investigating in class!! They did a “Turn and Talk” to share their theories. Without giving them “answers”, I then payed them a second version of this Johnny Cash sog – this time with images + music. Having visualised (a strategy that good readers do) meaning in their head, they now were creating AHA moments by seeing meaningful images connected tot he words of the song. It led to lots of “OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH, I get it!!!!!!!!!” and juicy conversations… just what I wanted to spark interest in our Unit of Inquiry project launch!
