A Mind Map… a place to “splat” your thoughts, facts, knowledge of a subject before you get deep into the unit. One of the first things we did in our new unit kick off was to fill in the bubbles with what is already in our own  “E for Energy” folder of our Brain Dictionary filing cabinet!!!!! I asked the children to open up their brain, reach into the filing cabinet under the letter “E” and bring out the folder for “energy“. What facts or vocabulary words did they already have from before? Some children may be brand new to the ideas of this unit, while others may already be passionate about it, having read tons of informational books, talked to their parents about it,watched TV documentaries etc. It is always a good practice to do a “Brain Splat” of your first thinking, so that you can look back it after the unit has unfolded… where did you start on the journey? Where did it take you? What did you gain by the end?! To add a little creative fun, I first had the children personalise thier mind map by turning the (rather dull black and white) smiley cartoon character into their very own Energy Critter!! Nothing like a bit of artwork to get the excitement going…
