Our “big picture” goal for multiplication by the end of Grade 3 is to know the 1x-10x facts BY HEART, or as we call it “Boom Boom”!!! It takes practice, practice, practice for this to happen, so both school and home time has been devoted to this lately. You know a question “by heart” if you can come up with the answer within 3 seconds they say… if you have to “work it out” then it is not yet fluent. HOWEVER, meanwhile that you are learning the facts by memory, it is very important to at least have some strategies – some “tricks” –┬áthat you can use to get the answer! It may not be quick right now, but at least you have the correct answer! This is what we call having a “bag of tricks” or “strategies” to help you along. As we move forward with the times tables, using all sorts of practice, we are also investigating different methods and tricks. There are many ways to arrive at the same answer, and until you become automatic with the answers, you may as well have a “tool kit” to help you along! This week we started the “AccuSpeedy self challenge”. It is you against yourself, seeing if you can improve day after day through practise, and move up through the ranks. Everyone is at different stages of learning their times tables, and that is alright – AccuSppedy is one small way of seeing how you are moving forward with these necessities of times tables. Remember that you can practise the order during your weekly “boom boom” math goals – games on the blog can be geared to specific facts if you find you are in need of practising them in order to move forward along the AccuSpeedy star chart!! Good luck – you’re all doing so well…
