Last week, we reviewed the concept of food chains and the children participated in a simulation of a food chain. For the simulation, we started by creating a freshwater food chain together as a class. We reviewed the transfer of energy and the vocabulary below. Next, the children were given roles based on the food chain; bear, salmon, and small fish. Once they had their roles, we went down to the field and simulated the food chain. As they were doing this, Mr. Wil collected data and the children made graphs to show the data.

Here were the rules of the simulation:

  • It is essentially a game of tag where the predators tagged their prey. This simulated the predator/prey relationship and the transfer of energy.
  • Small fish were allowed 20 seconds to get their food (river plants) before the salmon were allowed to prey upon them.
  • Bears were the last on the field arriving 20 seconds after the salmon.
  • All prey (salmon and small fish) were allowed 20 seconds of rest time in a designated area on the field (loosely simulating a survival strategy such as camouflage or shelter)
  • Once prey was tagged, they were to sit down to show that they were no longer alive.
