This week the children began taking a closer look at different foods we eat and beverages we drink in order to further investigate our focus question: “Where do the food we eat come form?” The children worked in groups of 3 to make some observations of of photos they had. They were asked to try and categorize the images into groups that they found fitting. The kids came up with MANY ways to sort their information! Some examples included: healthy vs. non-healthy, fruits vs. vegetables, meats, dairy, etc. The groupings were quite impressive and showed me how much they already knew about food products, which was great! Below are some images of the kids working, as well as some of their sorts that they came up with. We concluded this activity by asking the children if they could group ALL of the images (from all the groups) what two categories could we group them all into. Their ideas for this was fantastic! But then I gave them a stipulation, which was that the groupings had to help us explain further our question, “Where do the foods we eat come from?” After some discussion, the children came up with grouping ALL the images into “RAW” and “PROCESSED”, which was exactly what I was hoping them would come up with! We will continue to further investigate the idea of “RAW” vs. “PROCESSED” in the coming week.
