open ended word problem

This morning the children were presented with the challenge above.  They had an opportunity to think about the information given and the question being asked.  There were many tools, such as the hundreds chart, base-ten blocks, counters and drawing pictures that the children explored to show their thinking and understanding.   I was impressed with how some were able to dig deeper and explain their thinking process and why they thought the way they did.  After some time, the children paired off and had a chance to all “fish bowl” one of their strategies for solving the problem.  The children really enjoyed the opportunity to teach one another and to their from their partners.  They seem excited for the next challenge to come!

Two work samples of the the children’s thought process and problem solving.

The children are “Fish Bowling” with  a partner to share their thinking and strategies.
