MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATION:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back everyone!  I’m sorry that I wasn’t the one to wish you all a Happy New Year in last week’s bulletin, but we always start the year with the Search Associates Recruitment Conference in Bangkok, where we start our search for teachers for the 2019-2020 school year and beyond, to replace the teachers that have indicated that this year will be their last in Manila.  The search continues with recruitment fairs in London and Boston over the next few weeks.

I’d like to say a big well done and thank you to Nadia Hartley and Catrina Walters for the wonderful Manila Student Film Festival that ISM hosted on Wednesday evening this week.  There was a great turnout to support our young filmmakers and a fantastic response from our judges who were impressed with the quality of the films. Judges this year where; actor and film producer Jake Macapagal; documentary filmmaker Haig Balian; screenwriter and film producer Moira Lang; and journalist, film producer, director and writer Arlyn Dela Cruz.  We had 28 film entries from 14 different schools from the Metro Manila area and beyond – with student film-makers from as far afield as Cebu in attendance – a total of 103 film-makers.  Thank you to all the parents that came out to support the event.  The Audience Choice Award can be voted on where you can watch all the finalists.  The Audience Choice Award vote ends 19th January at 12 midnight and winner will be announced on the 20th January.

It is that time of year again when we rock it out on the Elementary School field!  Battle of the Bands, one of the most anticipated events of the high school calendar, kicks off tomorrow evening at 5:0pm with Prelims.  Here is the schedule for tomorrow evening.  Finals are to be held on February 9th.  If you haven’t come before, then please take the time to support.  You will be so impressed with the caliber of the bands and vocalists – it’s been one of my favorite events of the year for as long as I can remember.  There will be food available and raffle tickets for incredible prizes, so bring cash along too.  All the money raised goes to our Vicky SyCip Herrera Filipino Scholar charity.

Semester one report cards are being prepared this weekend and will be available through the parent portal (accessed from the www.ismanila.com website) next Wednesday, January 23rd.

Next week is our Career Exploration week.  On Wednesday afternoon, Grade 10 students have been given the opportunity to listen to the words of wisdom from some of ISM’s alumni, while on Thursday, they will be able to learn more about some of the courses that are offered to them in Grades 11 and 12 that they have not experienced thus far here at school.  This has been timed to coincide with the Grade 9 and Grade 10 Parent Information Sessions to be held here in school on Tuesday evening, January 23rd. So that you too can gain a better understanding of our academic program as your children plan their courses for next year.  Mr. Swan will then run a University Information Session:

  • Grade 9 Course Selection Evening (students moving to grade 10).  5:00pm.  Little Theater
  • Grade 10 Course Selection Evening (students moving to grade 11).  6:00pm.  FAT
  • University Information Session (follows the above). FAT

All Grade 12 parents are invited to the first Graduation Committee meeting next Thursday morning at 10:30am in the AMR.  I’ll be running through the graduation program and talking about all things related to grad.  There will also be an opportunity to volunteer to be a member of one of the following committees.

  • Senior Celebration Lunch – on the day before Grad.
  • Graduation Décor – inside and outside the FAT
  • Graduation Cocktail Food – outside the FAT before the
  • ceremony begins.

We talk a lot these days about resilience, grit, determination and perseverance and how important these qualities are as we prepare our kids for the future.  I’d like to share with you here an article that I read recently on this topic.  It’s difficult, as a parent to allow kids to find their own limits, but it’s so important that we try to.  I hope you enjoy the article.
